2012 has been Epic!

The innerfight vision has been clear from the day I established the brand. I want to positively impact the lives of people around the world through the use of InnerFight training programs and services. When I sat down at the end of 2011 and looked forward to how I would do this in 2012 I had to think big, I had big plans, big ideas and was committed to making 2012 the most successful year yet for the InnerFight brand. Well let’s cut the chase and check out some of the results.

2012
On an individual athlete level it has been an epic year:
We had five athletes competing in the CrossFit open (Benjamin Brodrick, Hani Hout, Chris Mues, Carrie Freestone, Mike Riley, Holly Purdy)
From our endurance athletes. Neil Flanagan has represented Great Britain in the world sprint distance triathlon championships.

Doris Matlok ran 250km self supported across the Sahara desert.

Jon Emery cycled across the Pyrenees in four days. Trudy Sturkenboom, Simona Foltyn, Chris Mc Vikars and Lisa Fenton completed Ironman events. Jo Edwards swam 10k. And a number of athletes completed individual triathlons at a number of distances.

On a class level we have firmly established two classes per day 5 days a week which are all full of awesome people achieving some incredible results. The commitment to training, performance and getting stronger from the likes of Marlene, Shakey, Kashif, Bamby, Tiny Mike, our awesome South African couple Jacque and Mignon and of course our old friends handsome Matt and captain Brooke’s has been motivating beyond belief. It has also been an unreal year for Neil Byrans who after his accident on September 19th 2011 is now well on his way to the best form of his life in time for his 40h birthday early in 2013. I of course must make mention of one of our youngest athletes, daughter of another 2012 revelation Duane Keighran, Alaani has a very brig future, check out her story here.

That’s a pretty insane set of highlights for the year and there are many more which I am sure I will take a pounding for missing out on!

In 2012 I had the privilege of addressing a number of school kids to reiterate the importance of movement and a healthy lifestyle in an age where fast food, reduced physical activity and less awareness of true health is erupting, I look forward to doing more of this work in the years to come.

A highlight for the brand in 2012 was the launch of the “Smash Life” seminar. This is something I had a vision for over a year ago so to bring it to life in 2012 was simply amazing. Having delivered 3 smash life seminars in 3 countries in 2012 and with dates booked in a further 4 countries already for 2013 this is something I am super excited about.

The launch of a more complete apparel line in 2012 was awesome. I managed to source great quality apparel from around the world and offer it at amazing prices. This year I have shipped apparel to over 12 countries! Unreal how the brand is growing.

Launching the InnerFight podcast in iTunes in the 4th quarter of 2012 was another landmark move for the brand. I was fortunate enough to interview some leading names in the global fitness industry and have a number more lined up for 2013. I will continue to publish my weekly radio show on Nightline with James Piecowye though the InnerFight podcast as well as exclusive interviews. On top of this I have just launched the official fortnightly podcast in which I will be giving news updates on the brand as well as using it as a Q&A platform to answer the many questions that I receive on a weekly basis. Just remember that your question today will be someone else’s tomorrow so through answering the this way I just see a broader and more beneficial share of information.

It has been awesome to complete another year as a major contributor to Men’s Fitness magazine. This has been a great  3 year relationship and one that is only getting stronger. It is a world leading fitness title, a pleasure to write for them and their support of the InnerFight brand is unreal.

On a personal level 2012 was a great year for my fitness. I once again competed in the CrossFit games Asia regional placing 7th amongst increasingly tough competition. My goals for 2012 were based around increased strength and the development of new skills, if you follow my training log on the site and have seen some of my videos on you tube then I am sure you will agree that both of these boxes have been ticked. I am super lucky to have an awesome team of training partners around me in “Danny the dog”, “The Ruski”‘ and “Kiwi Matt”. Awesome guys who work unbelievably hard in the gym and have an unreal ability to smash cupcakes, we are lucky to have such an awesome supplier in Sweet Stuff!

Thank you no matter who you are for your awesome support of the InnerFight brand in 2012. I sincerely hope that either through the InnerFight classes, the Smash Life seminar, the over 100 free training programs on the site or by the excess of 100 blog posts shared in 2012 that InnerFight has helped you in your quest to be the best you can be and get the most out of our life. I am pumped for 2013 and making it an even bigger and better year.

All the best and as always stay strong.

Total airmiles?

One of the biggest excuses I hear from people is that they are traveling and therefore they are unable to eat well and train well. I understand that there are certain challenges but they are challenges not excuses.

Plane

Now I am not the biggest traveler but with the below stats it’s clear I have not sat still. I am sure some people will have done way more than this and as for crew, well you are different story.

First check is total air miles flow in 2012: 95,000

Second check is hours spent on aeroplanes: 175 hours

And third check I made is number of countries visited: Total 12 (Australia, New Zealand, Lebanon, Korea, Thailand, America, Germany, Croatia, Denmark, South Africa, England, Oman)

Post your details to the comments section (by December 31st) and I will put up $100 of InnerFight apparel for the person who comes out on top…….get those calculators out.

Your shopping trolley

Grocery shopping freaks me out. Seeing what people are putting in their baskets that they will consume in the week ahead or give to their kids! It is out of control when you look at how much junk people have in their trolleys. Now I am not a supermarket stalker but sometimes you can not help but notice.

shopping cart

The issue here I believe is on 3 levels.

Firstly a number of people are oblivious to what is actually good for them and what is not. I will call these the blind people. They genuinely don’t know, haven’t been educated or choose not to educate themselves on improved nutrition to fuel their bodies performance and live a good and healthy life.

Secondly there are those that are in denial of the fact that all the trash in their shopping trolley is actually adding inches to their waist line, kilograms to their scales and taking years off their life. They read, they are educated, they know the facts but they just refuse to believe so go ahead and fill their basket with things that they like the taste of and gives them the maximal immediate satisfaction.

And finally there is the suffocating marketing that we of course have the option to see through or ignore. Hats off to the companies, they do an awesome job in tempting people to fill their trolleys with trash and plenty of it. Doesn’t there always seem to be a special on the “family pack” of sodas or chips but never on the broccoli. Well isn’t that strange.

So whats the solution? Well it is very simple. When you go to the store, go to the fruit and veg section and go crazy, when you are done there hit the meat and fish counters, then it’s time to head for the check outs. Yep you are done. End of post!

Is your sleep quality?

Sleep is one of the pillars of performance, without it, basic bodily functions are hard to carry out.  The first issue I run into with people when we are talking about sleep is the number of hours they are getting, often there is just simply not enough sleep going on, other things like watching TV seem to take priority!

However when we get over that hurdle the next thing I need to know if we are looking at maximizing someones performance is what the quality of their sleep is like. The old school way would be to rate it out of ten, how many times did you wake up in the night, how did you feel when you woke up in the morning or what was your dream activity like. For me these are just not quantitative enough. I am a nerd for specifics, for some data that I can look at in a chart and analyze.

Cue this little bad boy on my wrist below. I picked this up 2 months ago and have been wearing it ever night since. What is it? It’s called a Fit Bit device which amongst a few other functions gives me some great data on my sleep, not only the time I am asleep but also the number of times I have woken in the night, therefore the number of hours I have actually been asleep and therefore able to give me an efficiency reading as a % which I clearly love!
@fitbit to check my sleep efficiency #recovery #performance #fitbit #sleep #monitor #rest #night

It is so simple to use. Click that button on top when my head hits the pillow and the thing acts as a stop watch until I click it off again on waking. As it sits on my non dominant wrist it detects any movement I make during the night which Fit Bit deduce to be a disturbance in my sleep. So on waking and syncing the device I can see the total time I was in bed, the number of times I woke and from this the total time I was sleeping and the efficiency of my sleep. Pretty cool stuff huh?

Here is a graph of a recent nights sleep.

This is very self explanatory, but what it does, is allow me to set specific sleep goals which I know I need to hit to optimize my performance. I personally review these weekly and track and changes in my performance and then plan for the coming week. I find that if I check my week’s sleep just before the weekend I can then map how much I need on the weekend to hit my weekly targets. I would advise that you work your targets on a weekly basis with this sort of update and once you get it right enjoy the benefits!

I am hoping to catch up with the guys from Fit Bit in a podcast very soon to discuss their technology in more detail, that podcast will be available in iTunes so keep your eyes open for it.
